Homemade Rice-a-Roni

28 Jul Homemade Rice-a-Roni

One of the things that my family collectively loves is my homemade Rice-a-Roni.  Besides being ridiculously yummy, it is also a simple and inexpensive recipe.  As a side dish, this recipe feeds us all with leftovers….hallelujah for that!  Keep reading for the video and printable recipe.

What things do you make homemade that you can find pre-made at the store?  I would love some fresh inspiration!

Lest we Forget

28 May

I am so grateful for the brave men and women who headed the call and left what was familiar and comfortable for a life of upheaval and uncertainty. Today I pause with reflective prayer to honor those who gave their all…the fallen brave who courageously breathed their last breath defending the country and the people they so loved.

To the families who gather around a grave rather than a grill-my prayer is that our Heavenly Father will fill them with grace, peace, and healing. That they would find comfort in each other and that the sweet memories of their loved ones will sustain them until they are reunited in Heaven. Thank you, for your great sacrifice also!

As you enjoy your 3 day weekend please remember and pray for all the brave men and women in our military. Pray for the mothers and fathers who will never hold their precious boys and girls in their arms again, for the wives and husbands who will never get to live out the hopes and dreams they planned together, and for the precious children who will never feel the tickle of daddy’s whiskers on their cheek or the soft embrace of their mother’s arms again. The burden is too great to let this weekend go by without a heartfelt sense of gratitude for the meaning behind our three day weekend.

O Holy Night

24 Dec

~ O Holy Night~
“A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn”. Hope, our great hope in Jesus Christ who came to the world in the most humble and lowly ways to be our sin bearer and to give us hope (Google Jesus and hope). When there seems to be nothing left to give, feel, or even take-we still have our hope in Christ and Christ alone. His mercies are new every single day! Amen!
“Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother. And in His name all oppression shall cease”. He came to break the bondage of sin and Satan’s hold on us. There is a constant struggle of things that can hold us in bondage-grief, food, drugs, alcohol, p*rn, and just about anything else you can think of of this world. “For the slave is my brother” With Christ, you see a brother or sister in place where you might of just seen a prostitute, a drug addict, a beggar, a Muslim or Jew, or any other undesirable or different beliefed person we live among. To love them, so that even if they don’t seek or know Him, they will recognize Him in us.. Oppression of worldliness will no longer weigh me down in spirit and will cease to have any hold on my life.
Our Savior came to be the light of the world (John 8:12) and to save us from sin (Matthew 1:21). Rejoice with greatness and gladness that our Savior lives and our Savior brings with Him hope and life.

Merry Christmas. May you be filled with renewed wonder about the babe in the manger who came to live among us and die for us.
I leave you with a few versions of my favorite song-take a minute to really hear the lyrics and see how it resonates in your soul.

Teaching an Old Dog New Tricks

15 May

I left here last seeking to manage my time better. It has been four months since I shared and my time has been fruitful, well, mostly.  I read once that a new habit needs a good three week commitment in order to become so.  Whoever came up with that time fame must not of had me in mind.  My silence has been the knuckle busting work of the Lord. He has His work cut out with this stubborn girl!

The past four months has been one of discipline and prayer.  Learning to re work your whole way of being is challenging and frustrating at best.  I had to learn how to make a schedule, to put things on a calendar, and the toughest of all was the art of saying no (I really like to say yes!).

I went into it really excited and motivated with what I thought were realistic expectations.  After a week I found myself slipping into familiar habits and clinging to every excuse as a free pass to slack off.  So I kind of retreated for a bit feeling the sting of failure.

What I love, is when something is the will of the Lord, He has ways of helping you to see things through His eyes.  It’s like the proverbial “aha” moment.

See, I thought that I had to schedule my day minute by minute in order to better manage my time.  One of the things that I love most is the organic spontaneity of life.  I love getting the itch to just go and so does my family but my new schedule didn’t allow for it. I failed because I had such tunnel vision on how this new life looked that I never considered that there were other possibilities.

Life isn’t about filling every moment with stuff -sometimes the Lord wants you to pause, kneel, and seek His face, and then rest in His grace and glory in order to be ready for whatever and wherever His will leads. His way ensures you never miss the really good things…….and sometimes the spontaneous things.

What steps do you take to better manage your time and life?  I would love to hear from you!

Can you Relate?

13 Aug

For much of my life my weight determined my quality of life.  What I mean by that is, the heavier I was the less social I became. I would whole myself up hoping to  just become a name without a face. I would slowly draw away from the circle so it would slowly swallow up my gap.  I would become a whisper and a wonder.  I truly felt my self worth was wrapped up to what the number on the scale dictated.  With curtains drawn tight I spiraled into a pit of self loathing.

I have spent my whole life in a death spiral of one crash diet after another. Those consuming diets that steal all your thoughts and leave you watching the hands on the clock tick, tick, tick, ever so slowly waiting for the miserable days to pass. When a diet would finally stick, slowly the sun would begin to shine and I would again emerge vibrant much like a caterpillar breaking free from its cocoon.  Life was mine to enjoy once again.  I would seize every opportunity until it was time to repeat the cycle again.

I really needed proper perspective in order to reclaim my life and find joy regardless to what the scale said.  Psalm 139:4 says, I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful.  If God’s works are wonderful than so must I be. I am God’s workman, created to do good works, which Christ prepared in advance for me (Eph. 2:10). How am I to follow Christ if I am unable to allow His will on my life?  I must recognize the voice of the enemy when he is whispering his sweet lies in my ear and remind him that I don’t walk of the flesh but of the spirit (Romans 8:1).  For God has plans for me to prosper (Jeremiah 29:11).  Do you see, there are no conditions to that.  He doesn’t say I will prosper when I am 110 pounds, He says I will prosper because He says so! I  just have to be a willing vessel for His love and goodness.

Being at a place right now where I would normally hide, I am pushing myself to keep letting the sun shine on my face.  Letting God work through me for His glory. I am grateful that God’s grace is given to me in abundance.  I pray for victory!

Can you relate?  I would love to hear from you!

Bedtime Prayer

16 Jul

When night rolls around and all is quiet, I close my eyes and stretch my face toward heaven with a deep contented sigh I thank the Maker of the heavens and earth for another day to walk among His glorious creation. To revel in sweet sleeping faces, sticky floors, and tooth paste on the counter. I sit and count my blessings of the day and can think of many-freckles on little noses, white wispy clouds being blown away by a warm summer breeze, watermelon trickling down your chin, holding my husbands hand in the car, and hours of Candy land. I then leave my troubles at His feet. A smile and an amen, knowing that the Lord was in my today and He will be in my tomorrow. While I sleep, He is up to something and I pray that tomorrow I will glorify Him even more than I did today and that His will for me be done. Sweet dreams.
